A new (for Lithuania) species of mushroom has been found at the Čepkeliai state nature reservation
In 2009, Čepkeliai ecologist Dr. O. Grigaitė found a mushroom which was later identified by Prof. E. Kutorga as Pseudoplectania sphagnophila (Pers.) Kreisel. This was the first time it was found in Lithuania, and it has been found in Europe only in several countries and is very rare. It grows in wetlands on peat moss.
A second find was required in order to confirm the first, and mycologist Dr. Reda Iršėnaitė found the mushroom on 10 May 2012.
The function that this mushroom performs in the wetland ecosystem has not yet been researched, but it is undoubtedly important and irreplaceable, like all other organisms.
